BOM Tab, Flat View

Hi,

I'm trying to understand more about the Flat view option on the BOM tab, my users like this view better than the Nested view and I was wondering the following;

1. Is there a way to make this the default view when opening the BOM tab?

2. Where would I go to edit the columns of this view? When I look in the Workspace manager / Bill of Materials Tab the only thing I am able to edit is the nested view.

3. Can we add the Edit and Add buttons to the Flat view?

An alternative to this would be a fix to the scrolling of the Nested view, my users prefer the flat view because it lists everything on the screen at the same time and doesn't fit it in a scroll window which on some of the smaller laptops used within our company only show one line item at a time. Between the scrolling of the page and the window inside it gets very dizzying.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Denise.

Denise,

The plus sign allows you to add fields (it's big so it doesn't look like a plus)

I don't know of any way to make this the default view, and we cannot alter the buttons - this view goes multiple levels deep so, i think modification is only allowed in the nested view (only allowed to modify one level deep).

Does this help?

Hi Tony,

I'm not sure I asked my question right. The big plus sign is only available to add columns to the nested view correct? I'm looking for a way to add to the flat view.

Thanks for the quick response though.

Denise.

Thanks for clarification - you're right, I don't know of any way of adding attrtibutes to the flat view.

Hi Denise

Before I answer, I want to make sure there is no confusion about what the Flat View is. Assuming you have a Nested BOM with an Assembly, some Sub-Assemblies, and some Parts (3 level BOM) the Nested BOM will show

Assembly

   | --- Sub Assembly

   |         | --- Part

Whereas the Flat BOM will show

Assembly

   | --- Part

In other words, all levels of the BOM that have children simply do not show in the Flat BOM. At all. Only End Items show. For that reason, it is common that the direct children of the Assembly are not even in the view and therefore it is impossible to Edit the BOM in this view. So Flat BOM is a Read Only view.

In FLC Classic it is not possible to control what columns are shown in the Flat BOM. We have removed this limitation in the Modern UI and the same BOM Views are applicable to both Classic and Modern. However, Modern UI is only available for Beta/Preview testing at the moment as it is not ready for prime time. Feel free to join our Beta program to test it out (https://beta.autodesk.com).

You may add a new topic in the ideas forum, to remove the extra scroll bars in the Nested view in classic UI. As Hagay mentioned above, you may also try the BOM views in modern UI.
