Clearing Linking Pick List (with Search Filter) field via script

It seems that clearing a Linking Pick List (with Search Filter) field via script is not as simple as:

item.LINKINGPICKLIST_FIELD_ID = null

What am I missing?

I tried setting one to "" and it seems to work for me.

item.RELATEDPRODUCT = "";

Can you try an empty string?
