Package generator not functioning as expected

Hello, I am trying to use the Package Generator in Fusion 360.  When I choose a product from the generator window and select Add I receive a warning and then the window shows only some green outlines of the product not the generated 3d model I am expecting and as I have seen in tutorials.  They also warn of the warning sign but there item is still generated as a 3D Model.  Am I missing something here.
I do see that the tutorials I have seen say Update Preview not Add but have assumed they are using earlier versions of Fusion 360.

Hope someone can explain.

Hi, @leslieFRT9A

For most kinks of package generators, We have provided parameter validation from UI side. But some of invalid inputs would remain returns traceback error, which is not say understandable now. This may result in the window shows only some green outlines status as you mentioned.

Would you please share the detailed parameter information of this package for us to diagnostic?

Thanks,

Yiqiu

Hello,

Not sure what parameters you require but here are two screen shots of the process I used.

1. Call 3D Package Generator and selected SOT23

2. Changed a couple of parameters and clicked Add.  The second image shows the green dotted outlines I get after the add is completed.

Thank you for following up.

Pease let me know any comments or solution to the problem.

Hi, @leslieFRT9A

Look at your first screen capture, the parameters are default values. I cannot reproduce the stand alone sketch outlines status. Is the problem caused by parameter change you mentioned in step2? Maybe a video that records whole workflow would be helpful?

Thanks,

Yiqiu

Hello Yiqui,

i ran the process again with no parameter changes at all from the default ones that appear when i select the item and got the same result-dashed green outlines but no package.
i then tried with other selections and whatever package i chose including resistors, capacitors, pinheads etc i got the same result-an outline but no package.
instead of me producing a video can you provide a screencast of what you are doing to achieve your desired results and please include details of what section of Fusion you are in-the 3d modelling environment or the Ecad PCB environment?  I a m expecting the generator should operate in all environments of Fusion?
if absolutely necessary i will try to creat a video of my process but i am not equipped to produce a video of my process so will have to work out how to do that.
i can supply a detailed step by step description of the process i am using.
its almost as though I haven’t activated some part of the fusion process but cant find anything in preferences that would appear to change anything.
regards

Hi, @leslieFRT9A

The only way to invoke package generator is from library, either creating new 3D package or editing existed one from it.

The video attached demonstrated  the most general workflow: New library>create 3D package> invoke package generator and then apply one.

So I am curious about what would break the work of package generator.

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/community/screencast Autodesk screencast is useful tool provided by us tp recoard and upload the video.

Thanks,

Yiqiu

Hello Yiqiu,

OK now I see where I am going wrong.  Certainly if I follow your screencast I get the 3d package as expected.

However if from the design window for Fusion 3D Models (The regular modelling window not a library or ecad window) I use "s" (Search shortcut) and search for "Package" I get two options from the search window

A) 3D Package Generator

B) 3D Package editor

If I choose A the package generator opens and allows me to choose a package.  When I do choose a package however and click ADD  I get a warning with lots of hard to understand info then if I accept that warning I get the green outlines I have been seeing.  So obviously I have been using the package generator in the incorrect way in regular modelling instead of in a library however it does come up as an option when I get to it from "S" (Search) and Package.  I wonder if others are getting the same result and I suppose the same confusion.

Now I can generate the package I want is there a video tutorial you can recommend for adding it to a library package that has the schematic and footprint but no 3D package for that unit?

Hope you can help again.

Hi, @leslieFRT9A

Thanks for sharing your steps with us, PG panel should not be available there, I have reached this to development team.

I guess a collection of video tutorial might be useful new electronics users, Here it is: ttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60WOM0kqT6w&list=PLmA_xUT-8UlI0k9YsKK23onh_0VV2_DP5

If you have met other problems, please let us know 😃

Thanks for the video link Yiqiu.  I have seen several of those types of video and generally find them pretty useless as they are really just promo videos promoting the product and what it can do but of no help whatsoever in understanding how to do it.

Actually I have found the entire learning process for the Ecad/PCB component of Fusion extremely frustrating with very few actual "how to" videos, tutorials, screencasts or anything like that for the product.  Plenty on the Eagle process but Eagle was rolled in to Fusion at least 12 months ago and yet it still seems the actual "how to" side of it is totally ignored.  Additionally some processes done one way a few months ago were different when the next update occurred with no explanation of why or what.

For instance, I have a PCB developed from a schematic and board files prepared by others that has flat components when it is generated as a 3dPCB in Fusion.  Fair enough I understand that.  What I dont understand is why, as I understand it at the moment, I have to export the 3d version of one of the components I have found and downloaded from another site to a STEP file then import it so I can place it on the PCB??

But maybe I am wrong?

Hi, @leslieFRT9A

Electronics library is the very beginning of electronics design, Library is a kind of concept like "parts" or "sub assemblies" in assembly files but not actually the same. The package editor you mentioned also provided the functionality of editing devices with Fusion modeling commands. This is such a large topic and I am not able to explain all in one paragraph. You could refer to below documentation for some basic introduction at first.

Hi @leslieFRT9A ,

I hope you're doing well. For a how to on how the libraries work and can be made I recommend this series of videos to go step by step making each component.

Hello Jorge,

I have been working through the video tutorials for library creation and have a question.  I am using Video 4 Making a 3D Package and find the package generator is giving me a slightly different interface than the one you show in the vide.  My UI doesnt include a "Density Level" option as you show.  I have attached a screenshot and hope you can advise.  SOIC Generator.gif
