how to select whether to show package in 3D Canvas from 2D PCB workspace?

I do not want to put components on certain footprints because they are reserved, but their package keep showing up in 3D canvas even i unchecked the "populate" box. how to solve this problem except from hiding the component in 3D canvas?

Hello @xiao0097,

I hope you're doing well. If I'm understanding the issue correctly, the best option here is to assign a model to the part but make it empty. In that way when you move from 2D to 3D you won't see the package there.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

@jorge_garcia2

I am in this same situation currently. Are there any plans to make the populate checkbox live to remove the need for creating blank footprints? I think that would be a pretty powerful option to make use of especially in terms of automating the BOM during board documentation.

Hi @ritste20 ,

I hope you're having a great day. There are plans to improve the entire BOM experience in Fusion360. In the meantime, there are some other things that could be tried. If you have components that are external to the board, you can create an attibute called _EXTERNAL_ and that will null the need for a footprint in the library.

Now the Populate checkbox is actually controlled by the Variants functionality. You can create Assembly variants of the design where some components are included and others are not.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi Jorge,

Thanks for the reply. I think for a feature request, it would be a nice addition if the populate checkbox could actually be the driving factor to say whether or not to attach the 3d package to the footprint when the 3D PCB is generated.

That way, circuits used for debugging and development purposes can be left in the board design and simply remove the components for production. Stuff like headers, jumper resistors, reset switches, etc...
