Crashing PCB 3D

When inside the 2d PCB I press on "switch" and then I press "view 3d package" FUSION 360 tries to open the 3D and then crashes (always). Since it doesn't work, why can't I link 3D PCBs directly from my EAGLE anymore? I can't work without the 3d PCB.

I also get a repeatable crash when trying to "View 3D PCB" from within the board designer.

Hello @kb9ydn,

I hope you're doing well. By any chance do you have Bommer installed? It's known to interfere with FE operation. Is there anything unique about the files? Did it work at one point and then stop? The answers to these questions will help us get to the bottom of this.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

Hi @jorge_garcia2

No Bommer here unfortunately.  As far as I know it has always crashed.  The only thing I can a think of that might be odd is that the files I've been working with so far are imports from Eagle and Diptrace.  Although the one from Diptrace is just a schematic and no board, so that one probably shouldn't count.  And actually the imported board from Eagle I abandoned because it had too many issues, and it was easier to just start a new board from the shematic.

I haven't installed bommer either and even starting with new projects crashes.
As soon as I try to see 3d it tries to work and crashes always.

Hi @kb9ydn,

How did you get a Diptrace file into Fusion? As far as I know that's not supported at all. I'm really curious as to what the procedure would be.

Would you be willing to share the files for review? There might be a unique object that Fusion is running into and causing the crash.

Let me know if it's possible.

Not sure if this is crazy or not as I have absolutely zero knowledge of the back end of the software, but are there any special characters in your filename?

I had the '&' symbol in one of my filenames and tried a lot of different fixes, but this seemed to be the one that fixed it..

Removed and replaced with 'and', all is working fine now. Hitting 'View 3D PCB' now actually creates a 3D model without crashing Fusion!

Hope this works for anyone having issues as we all know how frustrating it is!!!!!!

Hi @Andy.Cutter ,

Good observation but no, I don't have any odd characters in my file name.  I do have dashes "-" and spaces but that's it.

Hi @jorge_garcia2 ,

The newer versions of Diptrace have an export to Eagle function for schematics and boards.  The problem though is that you don't automatically get the part libraries to go along with them.  I did manage to find a way to export a library of parts used in the schematic into Eagle, but the process was so weird and convoluted that I actually can't remember how I did it.  But anyway, at the end of the day it's most likely not worth the effort if you plan to make a PCB with the imported schematic.  Because the libraries don't really transfer over correctly, there is no linkage between schematic and PCB, or at least it isn't complete.  To be honest, once I figured out that the schematic to board linkage had problems I mostly just gave up.  What I ended up doing was to basically use the imported schematic as a template, replacing every component with one from an existing Eagle library.  Then I threw away the imported PCB and started a new one.

At the end of the day, I would say the only value in importing a Diptrace schematic would be to use as a template for a new schematic, or if you just need it for documentation purposes (visual only).

Getting back to the crashing, I'll try and do some more investigation to narrow things down a bit before posting any files.  There is a fair bit of process abuse and general bungling going on here (Diptrace to Eagle to Fusion) which I think is confusing matters unnecessarily.  In the mean time, if you want to look at a specific CER, here's one I just sent.

I didn't add any notes, but the way I caused this was to open the project, go to the board designer, and click "View 3D PCB".  It does switch to the 3D PCB screen and show the 3D PCB, but it's unresponsive and crashes after a few seconds.

I seem to have the same problem. I have one project with a custom library and a few downloaded libs from the manager and it works just fine to convert to PCB mode. And the other one that crashes got a couple of imported Eagle libraries with added 3d models. Crashes 10/10 times I try. I'm pretty much stuck!

Hi Everyone,

I hope you're doing well. We'll need some test files to get to the bottom of this. Let me know if anyone is willing to share their files.

After a bit more testing, the attached project crashes reliably every time I click view 3D PCB from the 2D board designer.  It doesn't crash if I start a new design from scratch, so there is something up with this file.

<RANT>

For whatever reason Fusion archive files can't be attached directly.  They have to be containered in a zip file, even though they are already compressed files.  THIS IS DUMB!  PLEASE FIX THIS AUTODESK!

Hi @kb9dyn,

Thank you for the files. I've created a defect report and have linked this thread in it. The developers are aware of the situation.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

Hi @jorge_garcia2

I've made some more progress on figuring out what's causing this.  It seems to be related to a particular component (Teensy) from a custom library.  I'm attaching a crash ready project.  Just open and try to view the 3DPCB.

Hi @kb9ydn ,

Thank you for reporting the issue and sharing your designs to us. The problem is the name of some components contains special characters like "/". We have got a fix and before the updated is released, a workaround is you might change the component name, or use a different component/library.

@yqliu

Thanks for the extra nudge in the right direction.  I saw this before but didn't think it was the problem because in my case the name of the "Device" did not have any special characters in it.  But upon further investigation the names of the footprints and 3D packages did have "&" characters.  The footprints are easy to rename but apparently the 3D packages cannot be renamed.  This appears to be a long standing issue with Eagle, which hopefully will be fixed soon.  I'm using managed libraries so until Fusion supports editing these I'll be using Eagle for library management.

Fortunately it seems to not crash with special characters only in the 3D package names, at least on this test file.  I'll find out on my main project soon.
