Auto Routing

When auto routing, could someone please explain how the Top Route is different than the other routes? Can you pick any of the choices? What criteria do you use to pick one of the options? Is the Top Route usually the best?

Hi @acsann ,

I hope you're doing well. The TopRoute uses a more sophisticated algortihm based on Voronoi patterns to create a sketch of best routes which is then passed to the old algorithm as a seed. The old algorithm used by all the other routes is basically a brute force route until you can't route anymore algorithm.

All of the details aside, the Toproute generally takes 10-100x longer to run than the old algorithm but the end result tends to be aesthetically more "natural". When working with the autorouter generally the only metrics you can use to distinguish the routes is the number of vias and the amount of completeness.  Generally the toprouter will minimize the number of vias and get the furthest. So if you can spare the time the TopRoute generally gives the best result.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.
