2D PCB Object Highlight on Mouseover Causing Issues

Version

2.0.18441 x86_64

A new "feature" seems to be highlighting objects as you mouseover, much in the same way it happens in the 3D mechanical editor.

It causes us to have to turn layers off to prevent from interfering on things like the Format Paint Brush for Values and Names.

Is there a way to turn this feature off?

Hello @chris_cummingsDT,

I hope you're doing well. You can use the selection filter to exclude certain types of objects. Could you elaborate a little more on what you are trying to do?

The highlight on hover is going to be improved we are looking to incorporate a delay so that it's not so flickering.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

Thanks, Jorge!

We are attempting to change the size of a >Name label, which is off to the side of the component, using the Format Paint Tool, since we want to just copy the format to match other >Name labels on the PCB.

Since the design has very wide traces running across the PCB, as soon as we are off of the component, the trace gets highlighted and hides the >Name label. In the video, that is right above the component.

Please allow us to ask you, all-knowing Jorge, to request an Opt-Out on the mouseover highlighting. In Settings somewhere, let us just turn it off, please. We do recognize the value of the concept of getting away from requiring the + anchor as the only means to "grab" and object, but many components have a lot of non-pad areas that make selection within the component boundary "iffy" as other objects "below" the component then get highlighted and possibly selected.

Hi Chris,

Please also be aware of the new "long press" option that was introduced for ambiguity resolution. Holding down the mouse and pressing long on the area where multiple components overlap, will allow you to select the one you want.

Please let us know if this helps,

PJ

Thanks, @pieterjanvandemaele !

That may help in some circumstances, but as in the very short video above, a long press does bring the 'R3' label back to visibility, it does not allow us to select it. Instead, attributes of the trace that was covering it came up.

If you would like a walk-through via a shared screen, we'd love to help you see what we are seeing.

Hi @chris_cummingsDT

The experience might be take a bit to get used to. Long-press until you see the different objects show up, then let go of the mouse and after that you should be able to hover in the "list" and as you go through the items each of them should get highlighted.

If that still doesn't work I'm happy to jump on a call and do a screencast of course! I'll drop you my email in DM so we can get in touch!

Thanks,

Hello, @Pieter.Jan.Van.de.Maele !

Thank you for that video. It details the operation needed.

I think it may be more obvious that our LED strip has large power and signal traces, so our design makes it really stand out that the highlighting adds a lot of extra steps to do what we normally do. If the developers could see it in their hearts to add a Disable flag for this hover highlight, we would sure appreciate it, LOL!!

Thanks a lot for that video - wow those are some big traces!!

I'll bring it up to our XD and Engineering teams and we'll see what we can do about it. In the meantime it might be better to revert to the old selection:

OH, WOW!! It is already an option? That is what we were looking for. That gives everyone the best of either world!

Thanks @Pieter.Jan.Van.de.Maele !!

Message 11 of 12

Well I would not call it "best of both worlds" because the entire system will be reverted to the old selection, meaning the new features like being able to select based on geometry instead of cross-hair, and the long-press etc. will not work. Hopefully this will just be required until we get those highlighting issues sorted 😉

Hi @chris_cummingsDT,

I hope you're doing well. I'm just a humble forum employee :). @Pieter.Jan.Van.de.Maele has given you all the info you needed. I will add, that if you don't want to lose the benefits of the new selection system, you can just turn off the copper layers since you are working on copying component attributes, the copper is not necessary for this.

This might be a way to continue to work without turning off the better selection mechanism. Just a thought, you now have all the info you need to make the best decision.

Let me now if there's anything else I can do for you.
