What's the best way to freeze a design, then continue with the next version?

The title of this post may not be clear. What I want to do is freeze a design (schematic and layout) for the purposes of archiving it. We have built a product based on this design and I always need to be able to go back to it.

But now we are about to create the next version of that product so I want to use the frozen state of the product (schematic and layout) as a starting point to which to apply changes and modifications.

What is the best way to do this?

Hi @anthonyEX9NB ,

I hope you're doing well. The best way to do this in Fusion would be to create a Milestone and continue working on the files from there. Remember that in Fusion you have an entire version history so you can roll back to any previous version of the design at a moment's notice.

So in the data panel, find the electronics design and click on the bottom right of the file entry to see the versions. Find the version that you want to define as a milestone and then in the 3 little dots you'll see the option to create the milestone. From there just keep working with the files. The lineage will be fully preserved and you can fall back to that version whenever you want.

If you don't feel comfortable doing that, then you can create a new electronics design and link the existing schematic and board to it. When you do this MAKE SURE THAT YOU CLICK THE MAKE A COPY  checkbox on the bottom right of the link dialog. If you don't check that box, then you will be linking to the original file and making changes to it which is not what you are going for in this scenario.
