The "Place component" side panel becomes entirely black after suspending PC

Hello,

I've had a problem with the new "Place component" side panel for the last months (so since it was introduced, replacing the old EAGLE "Add" window), but I always forgot to report it. When the problem occurs, the entire "Place component" side panel becomes entirely black and unusable. If I try to move it or resize it, it remains black. All the other side panels (both in the schematic and the PCB editors) remain visible and work as they should. Here's how to reproduce the problem:

  1. Open an electronics project and move to the schematic or PCB tab
  2. Suspend the computer (S3 sleep state)
  3. Wake the computer up
  4. Now the "Place component" side panel is black

The only thing that fixes the black side panel is restarting Fusion. Simply closing and re-opening the project makes the side panel remain black. The problem only occurs after waking the computer from sleep, if - and only if - an electronics project was open before suspending. As a laptop user, this problem makes using Fusion on the go pretty tedious. Here are my laptop's specs:

  • Core i7-7700HQ
  • Nvidia GTX 1050 mobile
  • Up-to-date Nvidia drivers
  • Windows 11 22H2

I am available to provide more details. I can reproduce the problem every time I suspend the PC.

Kind regards,

Marco Cipriani

Hi @marcocipriani01 ,

Thanks for reporting this, @panpan_fan and @HelenChen-ElectronicsQA could the QA team see if this is reproducible?

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

Hi @marcocipriani01 , @jorge_garcia ,

Thank you very much for reporting to us.

This is a known issue about Qt5, and the workaround is changing the power option to not set laptop to be sleep and hibernate. Hope it helps a little.

Good news is Qt6 fixed this issue in their end, I will keep you be posted once the issue is gone away in Fusion.

Hope you have a great day.

Best regards,

Helen

Thanks, I had already tried hibernation instead of sleep (which does solve the problem), but it takes just as much time to restart the laptop than to restart Fusion. For now, I'm saving and closing all the electronics projects before putting the laptop to sleep, so it's just a matter of opening them again. I'm still wondering, tho, why this sleep problem only affects the "Place component" side panel. All the other side panels and Fusion functionalities work just fine after sleep. Looking forward to Fusion 360 with Qt6!

Kind regards,

Marco Cipriani

Hope it helps.

About the time of this post, every time I start Fusion Electronics, the right side panels take up approximately half the screen on both the Schematic view and the 2D PCB view of an electronic design. Each time I have to pull the panel back to the right to get back to "normal" size. Once I have pulled the Schematic and 2D PCB to normal size for the first electronic design, any other electronic designs for a given session will open at normal size. Once I quit Fusion, and start a new session, the right side panels start extra large.

It seems possible that it's just my installation, but it happens on both the computers I use Fusion on. It's also certainly possible that the fix for the black component place problem has nothing to do with my side panel issue. The Fusion login credential change also happened at the same time as my side panel issue. For reference, I never ran into the problem with the place panel displaying black.

It's not the end of the world, but it is annoying to have to resize the side panels each time I restart Fusion.

Thanks for looking šŸ™‚
