"Push to 3D PCB" leads to Fusion360 crash

Dear forum member, Dear Fusion360 support team,

I have an issue when trying to create the 3D model of my PCB. Here are some details/comments:

  • When doing the 2D → 3D conversion ("Push to 3D PCB"), Fusion360 shows a progression bar "Preparing for compute" an then it freezes and crashes eventually. I have no error message. It just crashes.
  • When opening the same PCBa in Eagle and do the "push to fusion". I get an error as well. But no crash from eagle. In fusion I then get a .pdf error file who is barely blank.
  • I already used the 2D→3D for an other board and it worked fine.
  • The board where the 3D generation fails has a huge number of components (a much bigger board than the one where the 3D conversion is working). In fact I have a matrix of parts (137*44). But the 3D model for this part is blank (There is a 3D model buts it's empty)
  • When doing the 3D generation ("Push to 3D PCB") I check the box "3D PCB with canvases" to have a "lighter" 3D file.

I'm sorry I know that my description is a bit fuzzy, but I do not know how to get more information about this fail.

Thank you in advance for your help

Regards.

Hi, @sebastienN38NE

Thanks for raising the problem here. If you could reproduce the crash every time, Would you please share the design data with us?

The method is, to share the hud that contains your electronics design project with us (yiqiu.han@autodesk.com & weihu.zhang@autodesk.com). You can also send 2D PCB file to us. However, sometimes the problem might be not reproducible if 3D packages cannot be fetched.

BTW, if you could share your crash report ID with us, that's useful for us to diagnose the problem too.

Hello Yiqiu,

Thank you very much for your answer.

  • I will share with you the design that fails
  • Could you tell me where to find the crash report? When Fusion is crashing, it simply closes itself without asking anything.

Best regards,

Hi, @sebastienN38NE

Thanks for sharing the data with us! We can reproduce the problem you reported.

Generally, Fusion will pop up such a dialog for customers to fill in steps that result in a crash. However, rarely have got some chances that this dialog would not appear during crashing.

Looked into the board you shared,  the complexity of the board is the reason that makes 3D PCB generation slow. But the crash is actually another problem. We will begin to investigate the issue soon and let you know once it is resolved.

Rarely?  About 50/50 here or worse.

Hello @yiqiu.han ,
Do you have any feedback on my issue? When will I be able to generate a 3D out of my PCB design?

For what it is worth I rarely get the crash dialog. Most of my hourly crashes either just hangs that I must manually kill, or the App just dies with the usual Microsoft "checking for solution..." type messages.

Are AD getting a false impression of just just how often Fusion Electronics crashes because the Crash Report rate is unrepresentative?

Hi, @sebastienN38NE

Our development team is investigating the problem. The problem is caused by the huge amount of devices on the board. The current workaround is to simplify the board, save it as a backup one, and then view a simplified 3D PCB. Your PCB design is incredible and a bit complex, so generating 3D PCB would cost a longer time than small boards even problem is resolved.

I will send you a mail when the fix is addressed. It will always be shipped with Fusion's major update.

Thanks,

Yiqiu

Hi, @jonrbloom

If you met such problems and are able to reproduce them with specific steps. Would you please contact the product support team or raise the problem in the forum?

Thanks

Hi @yiqiu.han - Yes I will do my best to recall the steps and report next time it happens. It's not generally that easy though. I have yet to encounter a consistently repeatable crash in Electronics - I would always report that.

Hi Yiqiu,
Any news on this issue? I see that a new version of fusion has been released but it seems this bug has not been fix yet.

Hi, @sebastienN38NE

The developer has already found the root cause of the problem and is working on the appropriate way to fix it. It would spend some time and we are on the way.

Thanks

Hey @sebastienN38NE

In the latest Fusion production build, we have fixed the crash issue.

For the reason of the large number of components in the board you shared, It would spend a long time to accomplish 3D PCB generation.

We are continuing to develop new functions in view 3D PCB options, and hope that could help to save time for large  3D PCB viewing.

Thanks

Yiqiu
