Polygons change unexpectedly

I'm trying to create a large panel from many small PCBs. I've positioned all 42 PCBs. Now I need to draw connecting bridges and a frame. If I try this, the polygon area switches. See the video. How can I prevent this? Can someone please help me?

Hello @ralf_koschnicke ,

I hope you're doing well. Fusion isn't really setup to panelize boards, the 2D PCB always assumes there is a single PCB in the design. If you want to panelize the boards then you have to go into preferences > Electronics and deactivate the Detect Board shape feature. In disabling it you'll lose the ability to generate 3D PCBs but it's the only current mechanism to generate 3D PCBs.

Once you've disabled this feature then you don't have to worry about the polygon changes.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

Best Regards,

Sorry I haven't responded in a while. This thing has taken up so much of my time, and I needed to get on with the project first.

So, first of all, thank you for the tip, Jorge! At least I could now work with it.

However, I still have a few comments:

The fact that the 3D view no longer works isn't a problem. The more of a problem is that the CAM preview no longer works and at the same time the help via a grayed or black background is no longer there. This means it's no longer possible to check whether the numerous bridges in the panel produce correct outer contours. The only solution is to complete the work as precisely as possible. Then you can re-enable the option in the preferences, and fortunately, the polygons will remain as they are. The CAM preview will then work again. However, if a minor error does occur somewhere, you'll have to disable the option again to continue working safely. That's not very convenient.

Before I started on the panel, I found this support article:How to Panelize multiple 2D PCB in Fusion

That was very helpful regarding the names. Perhaps a note to "deactivate the Detect Board shape feature" should be included there, or perhaps a suitable function could be integrated directly into this "Panelize.ulp."

The whole thing has already been very tedious and has taken a lot of time. At the beginning, after I had duplicated the boards and they were all correctly positioned, I initially disabled the copper layers for clarity. While working on the panel, Fusion froze every now and then for about 10 minutes !!! This was very unspecific. Sometimes after each step. Then I could work for another half hour. I think it's easy to understand that this was very tiring work. I thought it was due to the size and complexity of the multiplier panel.

When I finally finished everything and turned the copper layers back on, I got a nasty surprise. Almost all of the polygon pours were destroyed. All the hard work was for nothing.

In retrospect, it's now clear why Fusion froze so often. Presumably whenever a change in a contour triggered a recalculation of the polygons.

In the second attempt, with the Detect Board shape feature disabled, the freeze didn't occur a single time. The work that previously took 6 hours was now done in 1.5 hours.

So, I think at the very least, the reference to "deactivate the Detect Board shape feature" should be clearly stated. However, a special feature for panels would be desirable. It would be truly fantastic if the user could specify a number of rows and columns for multiplier panels, and everything else would be largely automated 😉

Best regards

Ralf
