library part naming conventions

what are the conventions regarding the naming of standard parts, like resistors and capacitors in the rcl library?

for example, what do the numbers represent in C-US025-025X050?

clearly C is for capacitor, US is for the schematic symbol used in the US.

what do the numbers represent, what units are they in, and where is the decimal point?

likewise for the surface mount parts, C-USC0402 and C-USC0402K

and for the polarized (electrolytics)?

as for the resistors, R-US_0207/2V, R-US_0207/5V, R-US_0207/7

the V means it sits vertically, but i don't get the rest

the description tells me nothing - what does type 0207, grid 5 mm mean?

Hi @wwfeldman

thank you for participating in the forum and your great question.

Let me try to give you some information on this.

For resistors the units are in mm.

0207/7     -   body diameter about 2mm, length about 7mm. Pitch of about 7mm (actually 7.62mm)

0207/5V   -   body diameter about 2mm, length about 7mm. Pitch of about 5mm (actually 5.08mm). Vertically mounted

likewise for the surface mount parts, C-USC0402 and C-USC0402K

and for the polarized (electrolytics)?

These package namings are standardized in IPC-SM-782.

This table is taken from the following web site with more information :

C025-025x050    -  pitch about 2.5mm (0.254mm), body 2.5mm x 5.0mm

C150-054x183    -   pitch about 15mm  (15.24mm),  body 5.4mm x 18.3mm

These values do not give information about the height of a component.

Hope this helps.

its certainly a start

which template in "create new package" would i use to make a through hole capacitor,

like a C-US025-025x050?

Hi @wwfeldman ,

I hope you're doing well. I would use the axial or radial templates, these are the closes to through hole caps and what we typically use to generate them.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

does that mean you use a cylindrical model for a rectangular capacitor, such as those in the attached pdf?
