Free and precise placement of component on 2DPCB

In Fusion 360 Electronics, I’m struggling with some basic functions. When the center of a pad is misaligned with the grid in the 2D PCB, I can’t snap it to the grid or move it to align with specific lines. I would like an option to move parts based on precise dimensions.

Also, I wish there was a mode where I could work with wiring in the 2D PCB view without needing a circuit.

Hello @youngtokid,

I hope you're doing well. So you can snap an object on grid by holding ctrl and then left clicking the component. Working without a schematic is generally more trouble than it's worth, it's worth taking the time to get comfortable with a schematic. You can locate any object or line precisely by using the command line interface and typing coordinates using this format (x-coord y-coord).

You can now draw sketches on the 3D PCB and align to them on the 2D PCB using the align command. Play with it and you'll see how it works. This functionality will be available in an upcoming release.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

Thank you.

I just learned that holding Ctrl and clicking in move mode snaps the component to the grid. Thank you! I have a follow-up question about this. It seems that only the origin (the cross mark) of the component snaps to the grid. If a through-hole pad is not located on the origin, is there a way to snap the pad itself to the grid?

Also, regarding the method of specifying (x y) in move mode, it seems to use absolute coordinates from the origin. If I want to move something using relative coordinates, I could set the grid spacing to a specific value and use that, but is there a way to use something like (@x @y) for relative movement?

Hello @youngtokid,

I hope you're doing well. The only reference a component has is that cross mark, so the snap is relative to that as is the coordinate specification.

You can do relative coordinates. You setup the relative origin using the MARK command. Once that relative origin is created then you can locate relative to that origin using the following syntax (R x-coord y-coord). You'll notice that the MARK command also gives you access to Polar coordinates (RP length angle) so you can locate things relative to that as well.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.
