Can't move certain packages in some directions

I spent several hours laying out a 3D rendering of a circuit board and I often found that I couldn't move an image into a correct orientation. It often happened with connectors. For example, a 5 pin socket would move side to side and front to back, but it remains hovering above the board because I can't move it down. An M12 8 pin connector is at a 90 degree angle to the board and I can't find a way to rotate it into the correct orientation and an SD card socket can only be placed on a board upside down.

I did all this by bringing my board from Eagle into Fusion 360, then I edited the board, then got the list of components. I would right click on the component and do "replace body" and I would then select a STEP file. It all works, except I'm limited in how I can orient the component. Is there a way around this?

Maybe you could edit the STEP file and rotate it there?

I didn't think of that, I'll give it a try. But there must be something simple I'm missing.

Anyone? Please? I probably have 15 hours into this. At one point I got it to work for a particular component as long as I don't orbit the entire board first but then I couldn't recreate that behavior.

Alternatively is there another 3D modeling tool I could use with an Eagle brd file?

It seems that when I initially do the "replace component body" and place the component for the first time, I can move it in any direction. After that, moving it is much more limited, to one or two axis. The result is if I want to move it I have to do "replace component body" again, but it got the job done.

Hi @Anonymous ,

Sorry to hear that you're having trouble.

Are you using library.io to edit the 3D Package of your library and have trouble to rotate or move the 3D model sometimes there?

Maybe you could try to use the Fusion 360 -> New Electronics Library, where you could create your library as well as the 3D Package by inserting the uploaded STEP file from left data panel as you want.

If you need more information about how to create library in Fusion 360, please check out this live video sharing. Hope it helps.
