Y vs Z Axis - Any way to switch Y & Z axis in a Model?

I'm struggling with getting my model's Z axis to be up.

I figured out how to set it for new models, but are there any tips on how to modify an existing model?

I usually discover my mistake when I go into the CAM workspace and choose New Setup. No amount of changing the Work Cordinate System seems to fix swapping the Y and Z axis.

I end up setting up the toolpath and then struggling here to get the tool oriented to the model correctly.

If anyone has an easy tip for swapping the Y and Z axis PLEASE share!!!

thanks,

Stephen

Hi,

Have you tried using the Move command to move the body relative to the origin?

The orientation of the part really doesn't matter when you make a setup in the CAM workspace. On the set up dialog for Orientation use Select Z axis and select a face you want the Z axis to point away from.

If you don't have a flat face you can use an edge you want the Z to point along.

And if you're really stuck you can select a plane, you need to turn to origin visibility on in the model workspace first.

Also just noticed on your last image you're using tool orientation in an op, you should not be using this unless you are working with a 4 or 5 axis machine so just leave it unchecked. Unless you have a post processor setup for 4\5 axis it will fail to post anyway, most if not all of the generic post will only use the orientation and origin from the setup.

Phil & Mark,

THANK YOU!

Phil - Your Move command in the Model > Modify > Move (M) was a super easy quick Fix

Mark - Your screenshots and walkthrough of the CAM > SetUp > New SetUp palette and how to manipulate WCS Orientation, Origin, Stock Point let me solve in seconds what had been taking me over an hour of futzing could not.

I still don't fully understand the Work Coordinate System's options, but your screenshots let me copy the steps and fix thedirection of my milling operation. I appreciate you letting me know that I shouldn't use a toolpath's orientation in the tool palette to fix orientation issues and that it is ignored unless working on 4/5 axis CNCs.

The learning process continues!

I changed the defult modeling orientation to Z up under General preferences.  Nothing happens.  X points to the right.  Y points through the Top, Z points through the front.  I want Z to point through the top.  Is this possible?

Hi @wkveitsiti,

Welcome to the Fusion forum.

The preference setting is for new documents, it will not change existing documents.

Try this:

1. Ensure you have Z up set in preferences.

2. Start a new file.

Does Z point up, towards the TOP face of the view cube?

For an existing design:

1. Use the view cube to orient the model such that Z axis is pointing at you. ( at this point the view cube will say something other than TOP)

2. Right click on the view cube and pick "Set Current View as" and pick the option TOP.

This will set Z up for an existing design.

Please let us know how it goes and if you have any other questions.

Thanks,
