Why does this area leak?

I have a simple sketch - basically a rectangle with a circle tangent to two sides. The circle effectively divides the rectangle into three areas. See attached screenshots.

I want to select areas 1 & 2 in order to delete them. I can select area 2 OK, but when I select area 1 it includes area  3 and the the circle. Why can't I select area 1 alone? I've tried adding the F3D but I get an error message saying 'Sorry, unable to complete the action you requested.'

There are several lines on top of each other.

Just delete them.

I apologise fore my delayed response, I have been unable to use my system for several days. Thank you for identifying my error and showing how to fix it. It was most mystifying.
