why do my components all move together when I want to move one of them?

Hi --

I did a combine and created a new component, and then I copied it a few times.

Somehow, I got into a state wherein if I try to move one component, they all move together in some sort of unified fashion.

What mode did I get into, and how did I get into it?

Thanks

When you do a copy paste use "Paste New".

There could be a problem if you use paste new in that the copy is not linked to the original at all so if you edit the original the copies don't update. I you want the copies to update if you edit the original you need to create new empty components and copy the body only from the base component. If you want to edit the base component you need to roll the time line back to before the copies were made edit the base body the roll to the end of the time line and the copies will update.

Original Component and 2 empty components

Body copied from Component 1 into components 2 & 3

Clipboard02.png

Roll timeline back and edit Component 1

Move to the end of the timeline, components 2&3 update.

If the only problem that you are seeing is that you want to move one component and not the others, but you still want them to share the same geometry, then you should not use "paste new", because that will create a whole new component for each instance.

What you may be seeing is that there are two modes in the Move command:  Move Component and Move Body.  By default, the Move commmand comes up in Move Body mode:

move body.png

In this mode, you are redefining the position of the body within the component.  So, every instance of the component will show the same results - this is considered a geometry change, and because all instances of a component shares the same geometry, all instances are affected.

If you change to Move Components mode:

move components.png

Then, what you are doing is to change the position of just that instance.

Here is a quick screencast that shows the difference.  In this video, there are 3 instances of a simple component, which has one body.  First, I do Move Body, and every instance updates.  Then, I do Move Component, and you can see that only one instance moves:

Hope this helps,

I somehow have the distinct feeling that the previous posts did not completely apdress the problem.

I am asuming that you used "Paste" so you create instances or linked compies of the original.

Then you highlighted one of the objects in the viewport, right-clicked and chose "move". That was a bad move (pun intended ) 😉

With the selection filters in default settings when you highlight an object in the browser it may look like you've highlighted a component, but what you've highlighted is only the body within the component.

That's the reason they all appear to move in unison, because you are moving the body in the component away from it's origin point in the component. Because they are linked components meaning the geometry in the components is the same they all move together.

I've posted an Idea for more intelligent selection filters manymoths ago because Ia mgetting entierel annyed of having to explain the same thing over and over agin. this is not the OP or generally the users fault. It is only natural that users want to work in the Viewport. That is the intuitive way. Time for the Fusion team to chane this!

To move a component it's best to highlight it in the browser and then use the move command.

HI --

Thank you all for the replies --

@HughesTooling thanks for explaining about the paste vs. paste new.   I'm pretty sure I just did a plain old paste.

@jeff_strater  and @TrippyLighting  -- you are both correct.    I never noticed the selection box in the move dialog.   Also, yes, I did do a right click on the component, and did a move, and it was  moving a body by default, but if I click the component on the browser to do the move, it does a component move.

I've learned something today 🙂

I'll see if I can mark both as solutions
