I've activated this somehow or perhaps it came with a update, just don't know but suddenly it now appears and while I've looked for a solution to turn it off and find out it's purpose for some time have found nothing.

1) What is the purpose of black halo?

2) Can it be toggled?

this looks like it is the layout grid.  How big is your model, and what are your grid settings?

You can also check your grid settings in this menu.

haha, knew it would be simple, not a big model but grid spacing was some how set to .01 inch, when zoomed in just looked like a solid black surface

Much better, now on to the next hurdle
