Using sketch from one component in another?

Hi,

A real newbie here so apologies if this turns out to be me making a silly mistake.

I am following a youtube tutorial on making a case with a snap fit lid. It gets to a point in the tutorial where a sketch from one component is used in another component.

I've now gone through this tutorial 5 times and each time I hit a brick wall at the same point.

The design of the case has two -45 degree extrutions on the inside of the case. When creating the lid the sketch used for the extrusion one the case is selected and used to make a negative of the -45 degree extrusion in the lid to marry with those on the case.

I've watched it over and over but all I see is that the case component is hidden and then the sketch is selected and used for the extrusion on the lid.

When I try the same steps the sketch appears as a light blue outline with a small filled in square at one corner but I am unable to select it for extrusion.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

The video is here and the point at which I fail at is 15:48

Many thanks for any help.

Not unless you show us what you are doing. Can you Export your file, set to Fusion 360 Archive (an .f3d file), and set to save to your computer...and then attach it here in your next post? Or can you make a Screencast video of what you are doing prior to and during your failure point?

Please share the model you have so far and then create a screencast so we can assess where in your workflow he problem is.

Looking at the model that is fine so far. I can follow that step in the tutorial, just fine.

I think perhaps you just aren't setting up right to do it.

1. You want to change the Enclosure component. So of course, it must be the activated item.

2. You want the Case component visible, so you can see the sketch within it, but you do not want the body within it visible to block your view/clicks.

This is the share;

As you'll see from the screen cast. I hide the case body and then show the sketch from the case component but I am unable to select it to then extrude.

Ah. I see that I was right. You've got to turn on the light bulb for that Sketch 2.

Thank you so much. Selecting the enclosure component was the solution. The youtube tutorial I linked in the 1st post it was the lid component that was active but whatever I tried to select sketch 2 clicking the light bulb, clicking the text. Nothing worked.

As soon as the Enclosure component was active then it worked as it should.

Thanks again.
