Using 3DS Max files in Fusion 360 design

I have files created in 3DS Max (from Autodesk). I'm trying to use them in a Fusion 360 design and make solid bodies from them, but havig trouble. I am able to import them from some intermediate file formats, but when I try to convert the mesh to something useable in Fusion 360, I get this error message:

Whatehr that works depends on what sort of mesh you intend to import. Post a screenshot of the mesh and we'll see.

In general 3DS Max is a mesh and subdivision surface modeler. If you have a control mesh that consists of quads then this may work.

 

Fussion 360 needs makes solids or T-Splines, with the latter one needing the quads.

Hmm... I am assuming you do not want to keep this triangulated faceted look but want a smooth body ?

I Don't work with 3DS Max but I know Blender , which has a tris to quads function that does a great job of converting triangulated meshes to quad meshes. Of course I cannot see your entire mesh so it is hard to judge whether this would work but if 3Ds Max has such a function the I'd use that and then export the quad mesh to .obj.

 

Then that obj would be Imported into Fusion 360 and there it would be converted into a fully editable T-Spline body with no loss of fidelity.

 

I' ve asked this before, was this designed in 3ds Max as a subdivision surface ?

the control meshes for subdiv surfaces usually are all-quad surfaces and are easy to export/import in to Fusion 360. I've done this several times between Blender and Fusion 360 and it works beautifully.

There's a tool in 3DS Max that will allow you to "Quadrify" a triangle mesh. You may consider testing this and seeing if you get better results. The below forum discussion this and a detriangulate script you may find useful.
