Use component as base for another component

I have an object that has two identical halves. Only difference is between them are holes (one half holds nuts, other countersink screws).

I've created one component in Fusion 360 representing one half. Is it possible to create new component using that component as base, and just add different holes to it (without modifying original component)?

At the end I would like to have 3 components:

  1. Base component (half shape)
  2. Half with nut hols
  3. Half with countersink holes

You should be able to use "Derive" from the "Create" menu for this. The derived part remains linked to the originating part so any changes made to the original propagate through to the derived part.

I've created a Windows application (and now Mac as well) for creating custom thread files for Fusion. You can find out about it here. Hope you find it useful.
If you need to know how to offset threads for 3D printing then I've created a guide here which you might find useful.
If you would like to send me a tip for any help I've provided or for any of my software applications you've found useful, you can do this via my Ko-Fi page here.

Doesn't derive only allow copies from another design?

If you want all 3 components in the same design try using Boundary Fill and  set the Operation type to Component. To modify the Base and have it propagate to the copies roll the timeline back before the boundary fill feature. After the boundary fill the copies are independent.

Another option for @mersadk in this situation would be model the base, make a copy with Boundary Fill then use Mirror set to Components as the pattern type to create the mirrored copy.

I'm not very familiar with Boundary Fill but it looks like an interesting option. I'll have to have a play!

1. Make the base component (no holes).

2. Select that component within the Project Browser, right click, choose Copy.

3. Select the topmost line within the Project Browser, right click, choose Paste New.

4. Repeat step number 3 above.

5. Now you have three identical components that are NOT linked.

6. Activate the second one and put the appropriate holes in it.

7. Activate the third one and put the appropriate holes in it.

8. Joint them together as desired.

Please share your model. I would propose what I call the "configurations light" workflow, which I've described in the handout for the class I co-hosted at Autodesk University.

Thank you all for answers. Derive is what I need. I would be better if it supported single file, but I can split design to two files to make it work without complicating things. Hopefully Fusion 360 team will make it work with single file in the future.
