Unable to patch my 3D sketch

Hello!

I tried to patch 3D sketch using the patch command but it doesn't work. There is no error but the okay button is greyed out also there is no preview.

I used this command several times before in the same model and it worked before. Can you help me with the problem. I will attach the file with it.

Thanks

That isn't a surprise. I don't even have to open the file to see that that spline has about 80% too many spline control points. That creates curvature problems and in turn, makes patching difficult to impossible.

Edit:

I've highlighted some of the curvature problems.

Real production-ready vehicle designs obviously are not done in Fusion 360. But aside from that, the patch tool should only be used as a last resort. Lofts usually create vastly superior surfaces, provided the input curves are created properly.

Hi, Thank you for replying

I found your reply very helpful however it has raised so many questions in my mind.

1) The splines that have many control points are created by the include in 3D sketch command. I also tried to to make the spline again with less points however still the patch was not forming and also the splines were not accurate. So is there a way to get the spline which i previously made in a sketch into the current sketch with the exact points.

2) I understand the curvature problems.

3) The problem with loft is there are different splines and loft will make separate faces out of them (Which is a problem while modelling). The merge command is not available while design history is being recorded. (i don't understand WHY?)

4) Also there is a problem with loft that i am unable to select different spline for the same profile( like profile 1 while choosing in loft command) even when the surfaces are stitched together.

5) Can you tell me the best way around them.

SIDE NOTE

You said Fusion 360 is not used to design production ready models. Is Fusion 360 somehow inferior to other modelling software?

I said, production-ready vehicle models. Particularly CAR models such as the BMW you are trying to model. You can certainly create a model for visualization, but the software packages that are indeed used to create those surfaces cost magnitudes more than Fusion 360  and have tools and abilities not present in Fusion 360. They also take years to master!

I don't have any pricing for ICEMSurf but an Autodesk Alias Auto Studio license costs several thousand dollars a month.

As I mentioned, however, it is not just the software, but also understanding the theory and techniques that are very important. Here is a link to the Autodesk Alias Theory Builders. If you are interested in improving your surfacing skills then those are a must-read.

I can also hotly recommend the youtube channel of Handlebar 3D. While the software he uses mostly is Autodesk Alias, many of the concepts are the same and applicable to Fusion 360 as well.

Once you watch his videos and see the tools he uses, and understand why he uses them, you'll also understand why Fusion 360 is not used to design Class-A surfaces.

I did this intentionally!

The questions you asked indicated to me very clearly that you are lacking essential concepts, thus my explanations would have confused you even more.
