Unable to modify assembly

A coworker and I have been trying to work on a design together. When I initially tried to start working on it, it would not allow me to do anything. I could not turn items/planes/sketches on or off or anything. I ended up making a copy of it and modifying the copy. Now my coworker is trying to modify that design again (my copy) and has come up against the same problem.

Neither one of us had the file open when the other was trying to open it. Is there some kind of lock parameter that might have accidentally gotten turned on?

Are these linked files? The behavior you describe is that of a file that has been inserted into another design. Is there a chain link icon on the component browser node?

Thanks,

Hello mfeathers,

I have not seen this type of issue prior. Can you check to see if these settings are on? Click on the "I" (information) to expand in the browser to see if the files sharing status is turned on?

Then here in A360

Are these set. If yes. are there any error messages you are encountering please reply and let me know.

Best Regards,

Don

Hi @mfeathers, thanks for posting your question here. From your description, I guess you are using distributed design function. The components which you cannot edit should be an imported external file. Currently Fusion doesn't support in-place edit for these external linked files. But you can use the context menu of the component's browser entry, click "Open" to open the file in Fusioin. Then you can do the edit which you want.  Below is a video for your reference,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you guys (vacation).

Shared Link is set to off.

This looks like what we're experiencing. I've passed this info on to my colleague... this was mostly his assembly and I don't want to go clicking around changing stuff.

I was able to get my immediate needs met by making a copy and breaking all the links.

@mfeathers

Glad you could get to work using your workaround.

I just want to make it more clear what Insert and the resulting linked file are used for, and how they are currently used in Fusion 360.

Insert:

1. This places a read-only reference to an external (linked) file inside another design.

2. Aside from inserting from standard component libraries, another use is for multiple users such as yourselves to work together on one project by having a master assembly that references designs that are being edited by separate team members.

3. The master assembly will warn you to update so you can see the latest changes if the linked file has been edited by anyone.

Edit linked file:

1. When you are looking at a design with inserted (linked) designs, and you need to make changes to the linked files, right click on the linked design node in the browser and pick Open.

2. The linked file will currently open in a separate tab. Make changes, save and close it.

3. The master assembly design will warn you to update so you can see the latest changes.

Break Link:

1. This removes the link between the referencing file and the referenced (linked) design. It's usually used when you need to iterate on an existing design without changing the existing design.

It sounds to me like you intend to insert designs and intend for them to be linked. Is this true?

Please let us know if you have any more questions.
