Unable to import designs to new project

I've watched and read several examples of how to import one design into another, but haven't been able to do it for my designs. Here's what I'm doing

I'm working in the free version of Fusion 360 in admin mode

1. I created a component for a larger design in its own design file and want to import to an empty design.

2. I select the component in the "My recent data" list and try to drag it into the new empty project

3. Nothing happens. The item doesn't drag and doesn't appear in the new project.

Option 2

2. With the component design selected, I click the control key, select "Insert into current design" and move cursor into new drawing.

3. Nothing happens. Item doesn't appear. Clicking in the new drawing doesn't place it either.

I would think that since I'm in admin mode, I would have permission to do anything, but maybe that's not the case? Pretty much stumped, since exactly repeating the steps in the numerous examples do not yield the same results using my designs. Anyone have an idea what might be preventing imports?

Your terminology is a bit screwy.  You are calling a Component a Design.  I think you are calling an Assembly a Project.  A Project is a large database of components and assemblies that may or may not be related to each other.  Anyway, take a look at my Screencast and see if I understand what you are trying to do.  If not, please explain fully what you need.  By the way, using the Most Recent Data folder is going to restrict your designing a great deal because you will not be able to see other components and assemblies that you shave in other folders over time.  Get in the habit of creating folders in your Project, place your components and assemblies in these and use these to build other assemblies.  My Recent Data folder may help your quickly find something but if it is not recent, you are up the creek.

I watched your example, created a project folder, added a component, created an empty assembly file and saved it. Still unable to drag or "insert into current document". Any ideas? I temporarily turned on sharing, here's the link: https://a360.co/3bs5SeX

the link points to the project folder, but for some reason, its not showing the two files it contains. Still brand new to sharing, so i don't know how to make them visible.

What are you trying to share? 

Are the Fusion 360 files your own?  Since you are using a personal license they must be created and save in your database folder.  Try from scratch, model a basic brick, save it to a folder in your database.  Then create and save a new file to serve as the assembly, insert the basic brick component into it.  Keep it simple until you learn the problem.

Saw you note: With a personal license you probably do not have the ability to share Projects with others, just individual files.

Well I did what you said. Created a new project folder, created a file, added a torus to it and saved it into the new folder. I then created another file, saved it as "torus assembly" and tried to import the torus component by dragging and using the popup menu. Still no luck.

It's either some weird setting with my version of Fusion 360, or the personal edition doesn't allow importing. This should be trivially easy.

I have a Fusion 360 Personal License on a different Autodesk ID that I will test tomorrow.  I will save this link and respond as soon as I finish testing.  I was using a Subscription license this evening but I really think the Personal license would be able to do the same thing.  If it does not, it is not much good!.

I will be back with you with hopefully some answers.

I am back this morning to go through the same process I did yesterday but this time I am using an installation of Fusion 360 Personal.  Take a look at the Screencast.  I again want to emphasis that you must be using an database project (A360) that you created and you are logged into that A360 project using the same Autodesk ID as you are logged into Fusion 360.  I see no issues with creating an assembly, creating a component and inserting it into the assembly.  I have no other suggestions, if this does not work I hope someone else has an idea as to your issue.

Sorry I took so long to respond, but I put Fusion away for a week due to frustration with this drag issue. Long story short, nothing I've tried or researched has fixed the problem. I appreciate you taking the time to answer, though.

The only thing I can think of is that its permissions related, but I have no idea how to fix it. I've never specifically created another user and am the only person who has ever used this version and this account. The user displayed in the upper right of project windows is me, has always been me and as far as I can tell, I have administrator privileges, but still no luck with the drags of inserts.

I'm currently working on a project with about 30 different parts and its become seriously tedious to have to design all of them in one assembly window rather than designing all the parts separately and putting them together in an assembly. My timeline is out of control.

I don't want to destroy what I've done, but would deleting the app and re-downloading work?
