Title Block Help...

A while back I created a part, then created the drawing using a simple title block.  I forget how I did it, but I saved the title block from the drawing as a DWG, but when I try to import it to a new drawing I'm working on, it won't work.  I keep getting an error saying that the DWG file can't be inserted because it contains one or more blocks or xrefs.

What is the easiest way to take a title block from one drawing and transfer it into the new drawing that I'm working on?

Has Fusion 360 come up with a template title block that is downloadable?

Hi springerandy,

We do not currently support transfer of a title block from one drawing to the other.  What you can do is open the drawing with the title block you want, then Save As and select Drawing Template (*.f2t) as the file type.  When you create your new drawing, specify that template instead of "From Scratch".

Was your original title block a DWG that you created outside of Fusion then imported?  When you output a dwg from Fusion you get all the entities, you'd need to do some clean up work (deleting unsupported objects, purging things like dimension styles, etc.) outside of Fusion (in AutoCAD or wherever you created the dwg) for it to be a valid dwg for title block insertion again.

Thanks,

Chris

Thanks for the reply Chris.

I tried what you mentioned, but I'm still getting the error I mentioned earlier.

Am I supposed to save the .f2t file within Fusion or on my computer?  Asking because when I go to import a title block, I don't know where to find it in Fusion.  I was able to output a dwg file to my desktop, but that's not what I saved within Fusion, the .f2t file.

Hi springerandy,

When importing a DWG for use as a title block, as you've found, it can't contain a number of unsupported (in Fusion) objects (like xrefs).  When you Output a DWG from Fusion drawings it contains all of the objects in the drawing so this won't work for re-import.

The Fusion Drawings template (f2t), while it can be downloaded, can't be accessed by Fusion for new drawings if it's on your local machine, you'd need to re-upload it.

The best way to handle this is by saving a Fusion Drawing template then using that when creating new drawings.  If you have a drawing set up with the title block you want, my recommendation would be:

1. Open the drawing with the desired title block

2.  File > Save As

3.  Select Drawing Template (*.f2t) as the format

4.  You can now open this template, make additional edits, etc. as required

Now when you create a new drawing, you can browse to and specify this template instead of using the default "From scratch" option.

Once this template is created you can also access it to add new sheets to an existing drawing:

1.  Open the existing drawing

2.  Right-click the sheet thumbnail in the sheet bar at the bottom > Add Sheet

3.  Expand the "From" drop-down and select your template instead of the default "Current Drawing"

Now a new sheet will be added containing your title block.  This also adds the block definition to the drawing, so if you switch to a different sheet, you'll be able to select this title block in the Sheet Settings (at the bottom of the drawing window) > Title Block menu.

This thread: Custom Title Block and old drawings also contains some more info on the subject.

Hope this clears things up a bit.  It can get a bit confusing, please let me know how it goes.

Thanks,
Chris

How do I save the drawing template as an .f2t file?

I went into a drawing that has the title block I want, deleted all the views, and left just the title block.  But when I go to Save As, I don't see an option for a .f2t file?  It just allows for a location within Fusion, but not file extension type?

But I did make some progress, although I'm still confused a bit.

I went into the drawing that I'm wanting the custom title block for.  I did the "Add Sheet" process and picked the file within Fusion that has the template blank page with custom title block.  But when I complete that process, my current print goes away.  Is there a way to keep my current print and just add the custom title block?

It works like solidworks or inventor. Just get everything just right with no views. Then Go to File "Save As"

Done. I had to figure the out yesterday, so it's fresh.

Hi springerandy,

"But when I complete that process, my current print goes away.  Is there a way to keep my current print and just add the custom title block? "

This currently isn't possible.  But, when you open the drawing you want the title block imported into and add a sheet using the template:

Add Sheet.png

you should get a new additional sheet in the drawing with the desired title block.  Now, if you switch back to the original sheet, it should be unchanged.  Expand Sheet Settings in the Nav bar at the bottom of the window > Title Block, you should see that new block added in the list:

Title Block.png

You can select this to change the title block on the existing sheet, then just delete the new sheet you added.

I will admit, this is a workaround, but this should work to get your new title block into your existing drawing.

Thanks,
Chris
