Tips for matching shapes found in an Iges file

Howdy. I'm trying to make a little clip to hold a lens up against an iPhone. I found an interesting model of an iPhone 6 on grabcad. It comes down as an Iges file and Fusion 360 seems to import it well enough (mostly as sculpt bits, although some parts seems selectable).

The trouble comes when I try to project its outline to a proper model-based sketch. Using Project I'm able to get the outline like so, however, there's a warning:

I'm able to draw lines between the purple nodes, but I can't seem to make an enclosed shape.

Presumably, this is because the curves are something Fusion can display in 2D, but not manipulate in 3D? I think I've had similar problems with SVGs I've brought in.

My question is, are there ways to make this work better? Should I just try to trace them with the Fusion suplied tools? What tricks do you guys use to match shapes from other bodies?

Hello bentwookie,

It is possible there is an issue with the IGES file upon import. Can you attach the iges file for me to take a look at it? The easiest suggestion is one you mentioned and that would be to try and trace over those areas. I would be happy to look atthe Iges file.

Regards,

Don

Yes, posting the IGES file would be helpful.  Also, some information about what you are trying to do - where you are sketching, which faces/edges/bodies you are trying to project, etc.  Even better would be a screencast of your workflow.  I found the attached IGES file on GrabCAD, but it seems to come in very cleanly and is composed of proper solid bodies, but I don't know if that's the one you are using or not.

Thanks for the help. I've attached my version (but I think you've found it. They have the same name).

I uploaded the attached file and opened it.

I created a sketch based on the part by the home button (brown now)

I use the Project tool and highlight the outline in white.

I hit OK and see the warning: Some sketch curves cannot be converted to profile edges.

It results with the outline in purple that I can't seem to extrude.

Thanks for helping me poke at this!

I went a round a little closer and did find two segments that weren't joined. I joined them, but still couldn't make a shape. I'm wondering if there are nodes that are almost joined but not. I can't zoom in any closer to be able to inspect them.

I started drawing lines from node to node in an attempt to figure out what points might be disconnected. Here's a node that seems doubled up, but not connected:Screen Shot 2015-12-26 at 9.09.42 PM.png

Clicking and holding on the point shows three points. How can I fix them? I can't zoom in any closer to connect them.

Hello bentwookie,

I did open the iges file and can understand why gaps may have been present where the phone buttons are. Depending on where your sketch plane is the project tool will only pick up the geometry that intersects it. There would be issues to where you would need to trace around it to connect the gaps. If you want to attach your updated part I can look at your sketch. THe mention of the screencast might help show us your workflow.
