The profile reference is lost

I have looked through the forums and searched for an answer but I can't seem to find anything to describe exactly the problem I'm running into.

I have tried this several times and still have the same result. I feel like it is something simple I'm just not understanding... hopefully.

1. Create new sketch.

2. Create center rectangle.

3. Import canvas and use the profile of the rectangle to perfectly scale the image.

4. Delete rectangle.

5. Begin tracing canvas with fit point splines.

6. Try to trim and/or break intersecting splines.

7. Get error "the profile reference is lost"

I think this is referring to the profile created by the original rectangle used to help scale the canvas but I can't seem to find a way to break the reference between the two.

I have found a clumsy workaround by clicking on one of the points nearest to the spline intersection to be trimmed, right-clicking and selecting delete coincidence. Then I can trim the spline, but this doesn't seem like the right way to do this... Turning off capture design history usually helps too, but this removes the 'Edit Sketch' option.

I'm out of ideas, what's the right way to do this so it doesn't fight me so much?

If you think it is because of the deleted rectangle, why even delete it? Just turn it into construction line, or do your tracing in a new sketch and hide the sketch containing your rectangle.

Edit: I am not sure the error you get is because of deleted rectangle. The way you described it happening when trimming your spline it doesn't seem to be related to the rectangle. Still you can try what I suggested above to see that error happens or not.

Try this - sounds like spline points have been dragged off the sketch plane.

1. Import canvas and use the calibrate routine to perfectly scale the image.

2  Create Sketch then Show Profile is ticked?

3. Begin tracing canvas with fit point splines.

4. Try to trim and/or break intersecting splines.

If you get error "the profile reference is lost"  select all sketch articles and right click, if Move To sketch Plane is available, use it.

Might help....

Thank you for the help. I did find a similar answer in another post but it does not work in my situation. I don't have the 'Move To Sketch Plane' option in the right-click menu.

Changing them to construction lines does not help. But completing the tracing on a new sketch and hiding the rectangle instead of deleting it, that is working very well so far. Thank you!
