Solid feature recognition...

I'm trying to work in Fusion 360 with a solid model that was created in Solidworks.  There is no "tree" that shows how the part was modeled in Fusion 360.  In Solidworks there is, so you can suppress features, etc.

 

Is there any way in Fusion 360 to see the "tree"?

Just to be clear:  You have a parametric model from Solidworks that you have imported into Fusion.  Is that correct?  And what you would like to see is the parametric recipe in Fusion?  If so, then, unfortunately, this is not possible.  Imported models are "direct models" in Fusion.  See this help topic:  About Parametric and Direct Modeling for an explanation of the difference between the two styles of modeling.

 

If your model was created natively in Fusion, then it is by default a parametric design, and the "feature tree" in Solidworks is instead a "feature timeline" in Fusion, shown at the bottom of the screen:

There is no parametric feature translation from other parametric modelers to Fusion features possible today (I'm pretty sure that no CAD system can do this)

.... however,  just like in SolidWorks when you open a base solid and run Featureworks>Recognize Features, in Fusion you can right click on the imported base solid and select 

Find Features

Thanks CADWhisperer, I do now see the features of my part, however that second window on your screen shot did not show up when Fusion found the features.  

 

Few questions from this now:

 

How can I suppress features that now appear under Body 1?

 

I can still suppress the entire model by hitting that light bulb next to Body 1, but I only want to suppress certain features.  

There are still some features that did not show up as a feature.  I'm assuming that Fusion is limited and may not be able to translate every feature?

 

Whether I have the features or not, I am able to move my mouse around and the shading changes as I scroll over these features.  If I click on a feature, it turns blue.  Is there any way to suppress the feature once it's blue?

Why do you want to suppress?

Do you want to Delete the feature?  That can be done.

But because there is no history - you cannot suppress.

I want to suppress features like holes so that I can mill a surface in one smooth motion.

 

I can't suppress, ok, got that.  Is there any other way to hide of fill features?  I have a hole and some lettering that I want to either fill or delete, but deleting doesn't yield what I'm looking for.

Hi @SA2020,

 

If your goal is to just do machining, you can always just delete the holes - Fusion will repair the holes in the body.  But, you will not be able to "unsuppress" them, if you ever want them back.  Unfortunately, the direct modeling features (which is what Find Features create), are not true parametric features.

I tried deleting the hole, but it doesn't go away?  I now understand that I can't suppress as Fusion doesn't recognize the tree from Solidworks.  I do just want to do machining on the part that I'm mentioning.

 

How does Fusion handle surfaces?  I dabble with Solidworks and was able to suppress the hole and some other features on my part.  I then imported the saved model into Mastercam.  I use both programs at work, but want to learn Fusion at home because I have time to practice CAD here more than at work.  When I imported the saved model into Mastercam, I created a surface from solids and isolated the surface that I want to machine.  I then put the remaining solid on another level, so all that I have is my surface that will be machined.  

I saved that Mastercam file as an IGS file and just opened it here in Fusion.  I was able to get at tool path rather quickly, but are there levels here in Fusion?  Can I isolate the remaining solid on another level?  Does Fusion recognize surfaces like Mastercam does?

 

How do I delete projects?

If you use 2d ops in the CAM you don't need to suppress or delete anything you can just select edges. The facing op is 2d so that will work as it will machine the whole of the defined stock down to the model top or any feature you select.

My surface is 3D, so I'm guessing a 2D facing op will not work?  

 

Does Fusion recognize surfaces?  I took my solid part from Solidworks, imported it into Mastercam, then created a surface on the 3D geometry that I want to cut.  But I don't have Mastercam at home and want to learn Fusion more to see if it can do what I want.  I figured I could just use a 3D tool path on the surface, but not sure how Fusion sees surfaces from Mastercam?

 

I also have 3D cutouts that I want to machine, but unsure how to do so in Fusion.  I figured how to create my tool size, but unsure how to chain/select the cutouts.  These are not surfaces, it's the solid model that I brought in from Solidworks.  I tried an adaptive clearing cut and choose one cutout, but the tool path is cutting so much more than what I chose?

 

Are there levels in Fusion?  Sometimes it's easier to have just what you want to cut on a separate level?

 

Still can't delete projects, how is that done?

Can you attach a sample part, igs will do. It will be a lot quicker to make a screencast using your file than going back and forth.

Yes Mark, attached is an edited version of my original part.  I had to save it to my desktop as an igs, but then there was an error.  I changed the extension to dxf and that worked, not sure if that changes anything?  How do I get it directly uploaded while I'm in Fusion?

 

The orange section (top of part) is the surface that I created in Mastercam.  This is what I want to surface machine, but I'd also like to machine the chamfer, although I did not create surfaces on those when I was in Mastercam.  Not sure if that is possible now in Fusion?

 

On the bottom of the model are two letters.  I want to 3D mill those as well.  They were designed so that a 3/32 ball end mill would fit in one pass, meaning not wider.  What would be the best way to program those here in Fusion?  

 

Is there an option in Fusion to add a small radius around the letters so they are cleaner to the top surface?  I figured I could surface machine the radii in while cutting the letters.

Here's a short screencast to show how to fix up the igs file. There were 3 surfaces on the top so I had to delete 2 of them also the sides didn't want to stitch with a tolerance of 0.02mm so I deleted those and repatched. Be careful with stitch, the default tolerance in 1.0mm (0.039"). I'll do another screencast for the CAM. One thing to note trying to mill a slot with a size for size with the cutter is not a good idea and will usually fail, one workaround is to set radial stock to leave to a small minus size.
