Snap problems

I have had a number of snap issues in Fusion 360 and they are probably due to my inexperience with the program.

In the attached screen shot the program found the centre of the top left circle without any issues but it will not snap to the centre of the bottom circle no matter what I do?

I have been adding sketch points to rectify this and it has become very time consuming, what am I doing wrong?

Hi @Anonymous

I am not sure you can select the center point of a patterned hole. Maybe somebody has a method to do this.

The best I can offer is to use the Construct--> Point at centre of circle.

Regards

John

Thanks John but it found the centre of the circle at the top left in the screen shot so the program can do it but not all the time.

The reason you can pick the centre of that hole is because it's been projected into the sketch or it's a circle from another sketch. You can see it's a shaded profile.

You might have unknowingly projected the edge into the sketch if you have auto project enabled in your preferences.

Hi Mark,

the program has selected the centre of the can that you have highlighted; it cannot find the centre of any others as you can see by the square blue icon on the bottom right.

It has managed to pick up the centre of the first can because that was selected when I was asked to select a plane or planer face.

If I use the construction-point at centre of circle it picks up every centre without any problem.

I think the only way to do what you want is to press P and project the circle into the sketch. Your other option is to select the face when you start the sketch then all features will be projected into the sketch. I don't really like sketch on face because it makes selecting profiles difficult, one way around this is to start the sketch then window select all and convert to construction geometry before adding any curves.

Those are actually the bases of solid cans I was trying to create a cube on and I tried a number of ways including sketching and using the solid option.

The thing that gets me is that when I use the construction point it can find the centre every time so the program should be able to pick up the centre regardless of which process is being used.

Take a look at the attached screen shot and see where the program is snapping to, which should be at the lowest point.

It just will not pick up the centre or either of the vertical centre points; it will pick up the right hand horizontal snap position, but that one only.

It’s not that bigger deal seeing as the construction tools are so strong.

Are you using the points from the construction menu? If you are they are not the same as sketch geometry. In your simple situation it might seem like a good idea if the sketch picked up the center of circles but what if you have a large assembly with a few hundred holes, it would be a nightmare, the sketch environment can get quite slow now. If you want to pick up centres like that just project the circles you need.

I used the point option from the construction menu and it worked out quite well, I am making good use of construction tools.
