Smoothing a 3D scanned object

I had my custom insole scanned (see below). I would like to be able to modify the resulting object, but thus far have been unable to do so. Specifically, I would like to smooth out the top surface. I think most of the features on it are too small to have considerable affects when printing (our machine has a resolution of .05mm (it's a Taz 5), but ideally I would like to get a nicer looking model none the less. If possible, I would also like to be able to modify a bit of the shape to make the lip around the heel more accurate. Additionally, the model is very sluggish, which I think is largely due to the large number of triangles which make it up.

Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you!

There are some great mesh smoothing tools in Meshmixer. I would start there.
