sketch plane

I'm new and not sure I have the right name.  But here's a picture.  You can see the two sketch planes ???  One in yellow from earlier sketch.  The one in blue has been selected.  My problem is that I can't get to the cylinder behind the  sketch plane to extrude.  I'm having to move the object to be able to extrude.  I'm sure there is an easier way.

2 options come to mind.

1-turn off the sketches you don't want

or

2-hold down the left mouse button over what you want to select. a list of objects will come up that are under the pointer. select the one you want.
