I'm trying to simulate a C-clamp arrangement on a sheet of glass that has set screws as the method for generating the clamping force. What I've done is model a couple of cylinders passing through (sliding) one leg of the C-clamp and put an equivalent compressive force on the back end of the cylinder. The set screws press against a steel plate captured in a nylon shim so I don't have point loads on the glass.
My issue is that this arrangement doesn't preload the C-clamp at all and any reaction forces are due to a sort of prying action from the glass. My failure mode appears to be high tensile stresses in bending near the end of the C-clamp jaw. This is expected but my design is marginal for the loads in question (including safety factor) and I'm not sure I'm getting the whole picture.
