Shape the edge of a rectangular pattern of grooves

I'm cutting grooves into a flat extrusion using cylinder + rectangular pattern tool. I need to specify the length of each cut so that the edge of the pattern follows a shape. Right now I can only make a square, but I need to be able to shape a curved edge an a pointed edge. Any suggestions?

I assume you have a need for the small rounded grooves on the bottom of the slot.  If so, you could use Pattern on a Path instead of a Rectangle Pattern to follow a path of any shape.  If you could use a groove that has a flat bottom, a Sweep would be a quick way to do it.
