Shape from Cross-Section ?

I followed this:

tutorial to create a bear claw.

in the next step, I want a bear claw shaped cutout in the claw.

For this, I need to create an outline of the bear claw and was wondering if there's any other way then to trace the claw.

Is it possible to create a shape out of the cross-section of an object?

I need a shape like the one shown in the picture.

You can create a sketch projection from a body. That'll project the outline of that body into that sketch.
