Setting Pivot On The Fly

I'm trying to scale some edges in my t-slpine body, but want to set the pivot center in the center of the one of the selected groups of edges. After selecting the edges, the pivot centers itself between all the selected edges. I want to center it in the same plane as the topmost edges. So I toggle the little icon that lets you move the pivot, but it's immediatley snapping to the nearest geometry. I don't want it on any geometry, just moved up to the same plane as an edge. Is there any way to do this?

Unfortunately it is a limitation of the Set Pivot capability that an initial geometry point needs to be selected before the pivot location can be modified with the manipulator.  There is a backlog item to improve this FUS-14226 but it has not been scheduled yet.  If you know where that scaling point should be you could create one and snap to it.  A sketch point or some other geometry can work to set the location.

If you can share the example we can try and find a solution for you.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Yes, I thought this might be the case. It would be a great addition to allow snapping to points in a particular orthogonal direction; say ctrl click a point and one of the arrows or planes of the move pivot widget, then the pivot would snap the point to the widget's plane, and or along the chosen direction till the pivot is aligned with the chosen point.
