I'm trying to figure out how to select just the top edges of this text (easily)  The S has too many sections to do it manually.  I'm going to want to filet the top and bottom with different settings and can't figure it out.  (I selected the faces of the text for the bottom portion, and that's workable, but I'd like to be able to do the top in similar fashion (quickly and easily).

If you drag the selection rectangle right to left it will only select objects that are completely within the bounds of the rectangle. Set the selection filter to edges only (uncheck select all) and orient the view so you can easily select the parts you want- probably a side view in your case.  You also have freeform selection and paint selection as options under the select menu.
