Select only faces on surface of body

Hello all,

I need to convert .stl bodies to .step files as shown here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yO6hboYWnfM This works fine until I want to merge multiple faces. When selecting them via Select - Paint Selection in combination with Select Face Priority, every face under the projected space gets selected, meaning it selects the inteded face as well as the face on the opposite surface of the body. Which setting needs to be altered so that only faces on the upper surface get selected?

Go to the select menu and click on selection filters and deselect "select through".
