Sculpt on a flat surface

I need to create a scupted shape that sits on a flat surface or plane. What's the best way to do this? If I start with a box, the bottom surface of the box changes as I edit parts of the shape, and doesn't stay flat. Ideally, I'd like to start with shape that has a flat bottom with sides joining it at 90deg, then push and pull the sides and top while the bottom plane stays where it is. A cylinder seems to be the closest thing, but how do I close off the top and make it sculptable?

If you make a box, or any other shape, you can select the edges that define the flat section and select “Crease” from the marking menu. That will give you a flat bottom that will stay flat unless you change the vertical position of the defining edges.

Alternatively, you could just work on the shape and split it with a plane in the modeling workspace  after you convert it to a solid.
