rendering mesh material

Hello, I was trying to render a steel mesh grill like you would find on a stereo speaker, but when I go to render the mesh I have applied to the surface it just turns solid?

Which material are you using and could you show us a screen cap?

I was able to get the holes to show... not sure what I did wrong the first time but how to I get rid of the spiral look and make it like it was a flat sheet of mesh that was stamped?

You need to use Plane projection for the UV mapping.
