Is there a way to "float" a model above a rendering environment so that the shadow is realistically separated from the model. When I move the model (in the model workspace) so that it is above the ground plane, the shadow in the rendering workspace is still tied to the model ground plane and disappears when I move it above eye level.

Open the scene setup and there is a move button for the environment. This opens a dialog to move the ground plane up and down.

hi jwrockstarr0,

yes there is.  in your scene scettings click the Position button and in canvas and adjust the height using the incanvas manipulator to move your rendering scene floor.
