Removing Assembly Context

Is it possible to break the link between whatever causes the Assembly contexts? I've remodeled one part that (I think) gave a reference but that geometry does not exist any more. Do I have to delete the component completely and reposition it?

I see no reason why this should work differently than a projected/intersected line in a sketch, have I misunderstood what this concept is?

Take a look at my Screencast.  You can Break or Delete the Assembly Contexts as shown in the Screencast.  The Assembly Contexts called "Local" will sometimes stay with the component and you probably will not be able to remove that listing but since it does not affect anything you can ignore it.  In my case if I choose Delete, all the Contexts are removed.
