ratcheting mechanism for 3d print

I  broke my hand and need a 3d-printable variable-angle stand for my laptop, lest my plaster cast prevents me from typing correctly. This is what I designed thus far. I should now add some kind of ratcheting mechanism to vary the angle between the base plate and the laptop holder, from 10° to maybe 45°. Can you suggest some ideas? It could involve tension or compression springs, for example..

I have attached my idea applied to your model and created a Screencast to describe its function.  You speak of springs, first of all these will have to be pretty beefy and second you will need a way of locking the angle even after placing the springs.  Depending on the overhang of your laptop on your mount, with my idea you can add slotted tracks to the sides and then place clamping screws on each side of the round bar.  If you laptop overhangs a lot, then the bar locking will probably have to be in the middle rear of the round bar.  Just an idea.

How about an adjustable leg that rests in notches on the bottom piece?

 

Something like this.

thank you, this is very useful! I like it because it would be very light. But I don't understand how you propose to fix the roller. Can you elaborate?

I sketch in a very crude layout, of one side, of what I was envisioning.  There would be a tapped hole in the rod and a small threaded knob through the slot.  As I mentioned earlier, if your laptop overlaps the edges of your design, this will not work.  If this is the case, move a similar idea to the center back of the rod under the angle top.
