Questions about copy/paste operations

I've made a sketch in one design, and I'd like to paste it into another, different design.

In Design 1, I control-click the browser sketch entry, I see and select the 'copy' option. I switch to Design 2 (which is blank so far). I click 'create sketch' and pick a plane. I look for a 'paste' option - can't find one. I try 'command-V (I'm on a Mac), nothing happens. Control-click the sketch in browser tree, no paste option. Can't see how to insert the sketch I did and copied in Design 1.

Just for fun, I go back to Design 1, click 'create sketch', pick a plane, then 'control-click the new sketch's browser entry - and there's a 'paste' choice, which works, placing my sketch on the selected plane with movement handles.

Is "copy' not capable of transferring sketches across designs?

Regarding copy/paste of solid bodies: trying to do with a simple solid body what I described above for sketches 100% crashes the program. Crash report going out now.

I guess I'm confused about how to get simple entities I may have in one design across to another. Advice gladly taken.

Sorry to hear of your troubles.

The read me has several entries for copy and paste.

The bottom line is that parametric modeling does not support copy and paste between designs.

For sketches and bodies, in a direct, non-parametric model, copy and paste works within the envelope of a component. You can copy and paste components between (non-parametric) designs.

To do this:

  1. Right click on the top node of the browser and pick Do not capture Design History. (NOTE: this will remove all parameters and timeline aspects of your design)
  2. Create a new component.
  3. Drag or copy the sketch into this new component.
  4. Right click to copy the sketch component.
  5. In a new, non-parametric part file, right click on the top node of the browser and Paste.
