proper use of MIRROR

I've drawn a half a shape and want to mirror it to complete a symmetrical shape. ( in sketch ) when I bring up the mirror command it wants to know what I would like to mirror, in order to not just get an edge or face or line, I have to zoom way out and "marquee select" to get every aspect of the item, quite tedious, and secondly it wants to know on what line I would like to mirror, but it will not accept a line that is the edge of my item I'm trying to mirror, also adding a line for sole purpose of using it to mirror about can't be touching my item or it marries it and again is not acceptable, if I place the line off of the item I'm trying to mirror then it does it, but it produces a gap.
I am clearly fighting the software and am missing a basic approach concept. My sketch sort of resembles a spoon, I drew a single line part level and part dished downward, then I offset it, then I drew 2 little lines at the ends to close it, it even turned tan at the final close. then I tried to mirror it so it would look like a double ended spoon (if you will) it's really to clamp two 1" pipes parallel to each other 5" apart.
I hope all that made sense
How do you really do it?
How can I set an item to always be whole never a face or line or curve or or?
Sometimes I want to make complex subtracting tool, how do I keep the tool from disappearing when cutting?
My only excuse is, it's my first day. I do seem to be able to fly the 2D AutoCad pretty good.
