Processing of 3D Scan Data

Hello Fusion 360 Users,

first I'd like to say that I really like Fusion 360 and I'm looking forward to the next steps on the Roadmap!

I'm currently working on a project (for a startup company) where I need to add holes and other small features to 3D scanned Data. I've already tried converting the STL to Quad surfaces and then using the Conversion feature in Fusion 360 to create solids. Sadly Fusion 360 crashes on meshes with more than 10k surfaces. Even if it works Fusion 360 seems not to be able to create a shell from the generated solid(crashes). My new approach is using the mesh to brep feature which seems very promising. Fusion 360 is able to create a solid and even a shell from that solid without any slowdowns. Even though this approach ist working, the limit of 10k for mesh to brep isn't enough for the scan data I'm using.

I'm looking forward to the Mesh Modelling Workspace and I'd like to know if the 10k limit is lifted. If not, is it possible to somehow circumvent the limit? I need to decide in the near future if Fusion 360 is fitting for the desired tasks and if it will be used in the future of the project.

Greetings,

Alexander

This topic really has been so overly excessively covered on this Forum that you should easily find information on how to proceed.

The key word here is re-topologizing.

Non of the semi automated tri-mesh to quad solutions involving other software, such as autodesk Memento or InstantMeshes etc.  can even closely match the peformance and accuracy of a properly retopologized mesh. This applies to the Sculpt, or T-Splien environent in Fusion 360.

Re-topologizing meshes is usually done with specialized applications such a TopoGun or perhaps the Blender plugin RetopoFlow.

I'm sorry, I should have been more specific on what we try to achieve. The process I'm currently doing manually should be automated in the future. Therefore we need can't use any programs for re-topology which need manual input or can't be acessed through an API. I haven't found any programs fitting our needs besides Fusion360 yet.
