preventing mirror image cutting

Hello..

I am attempting make an extrude cut in this solid model but I am getting a mirror image cut that I don't want.  These are jaws for a CNC vice.  I copied and rotated the second jaw around.  I do not know how to prevent this.  I don't know how to separate the 2 vice jaws.  I have tried isolating the 1 jaws and cut it and then un-isolate it but the mirror cut is still there.

I am stuck!  Help Please.  I have been wasting much time on this.  Thanks

@Anonymous

Change the two sided to single in the options under the direction setting.

Thanks Phil.  That is not the solution, I tired.  I want to cut both sides of the geometry, above and below where the geometry is located.

Thanks for the fast reply 🙂

Maybe this image will illustrate why.

Yes. How come? The part is a copy and then rotated around. How do I unlink them? Thanks

I understand the problem here.  I'm on my way out the door, but I'll try to explain it later tonight.

The short version is:  You are cutting into a component that has been instanced twice in your design, and one instance is flipped 180 degrees from the other.  The cut affects the component itself, so both instances of it are affected.  I can illustrate in a simpler model.

More to follow...

OK, here is a little screencast that attempts to explain what you are seeing.  Hope it helps clear things up for you.  I admit it had me stumped at first, too.

Thank you Jeff.  PASTE NEW!!  Got it.  I was telling my apprentice it is probably something easy I am over looking and it was something simple.  I have experienced a similar effect when patterning a component for making cutter tool paths.  I have had troubles with duplicated geometry on copied components.  I have projected geometry on one of the patterned components and all of the components get the same geometry which is makes thing real messy and cluttered up. I am now figuring if I paste new that problem will now go away.

Again thank you Jeff.  I appreciate your time in showing this solution.  I am sure that I am not the only one that will benefit from your screencast.

Cheers
