Placing a point precisely on a line

Let's say I have a sketch that consists of a single horizontal line 40 mm long. If I want to place a point on one end of the line, it's really easy. And if I want to place a point in the middle of line, Fusion will show me where it is. But how would I place a point at 5 mm or some other arbitrary distance from the end of the line (or from another point)?

Hi,

Overlapping lines should always be avoided in sketches.

Ah, yes! Really helpful. Was thrown off a bit because I am getting familiar (if one ever does) with Fusion's 3D sketching possibilities. Must keep in mind which plane I'm on

The method shown in the video is definitely not a good way to place a point on a line.  Simply create a point anywhere (close to the line). Apply a coincident constraint between the point and the line (The line should be fully constrained first). Next dimension the point relative to the line end point.  Fusion 360 may also automatically create the coincident constraint between the point and the line, but when you apply it,  you know that it is correct😀

I totally agree with you @g-andresen and @etfrench , Personally, I tend to do it the way I showed in the Screencast. And maybe putting a wrong impression to new users. And I should be portraying the use of Constraints, but these overlapping lines never cause me any trouble. Any ways they are going to be hidden once the sketch is Extruded, etc. And after using the software since a long time, and having a good experience, this suits me and I am able to design quickly...

But I agree with you.. I'll also try to use Constraints more frequently in my sketches..

Thanks and Regards,

Rushabh Thakkar.

Hi,

I would like to mention here only 2 problems with the use of overlapping lines.
1. they increase the probability that the sketch will be displayed as undefined in the browser.
2. using variables increases the risk that the assignment to features is not present and when they are changed, the intended effect does not occur.
