Part list showing all components from design made with array command

Made an array from one body. On drawing I couldn't select the individual parts for a balloon due to them not being components. Back to the model and made all the involved parts into components and these now show up as individual items in the parts list, meaning I have in this case some 35 identical parts in the list but with individual part no.

In this case, should the array been made from a component instead of a body?

Correct!

When you pattern bodies, you are actually patterning geometry. When you then create components form all these bodies that are all independent coronets that can be edited independently. Thus you have 30 individual components in the BOM.

When you pattern a component you are creating instances of that component, meaning that all the patterned instance are just pointing to the one data set continuing the geometry. That results in a single line item on the BOM with a count of 30.

Hi Peter,

Well without doing there would be no learning!

The hierarchy of Fusion360  between part and component can sometimes have deeper implications than people are used to from other software. I have seen some videos on the subject and they explain the basics pretty good.

However as in this case, one can end up with a lot of numeric data being useless and having to re-design an already functional assembly, except for the drawing which as always is the last step.

Wish there was more interactive support on such instances.

Anyway, I wont make the same mistake again!

many thanks,,,
