Odd behaviour I don't understand.

Hi all.

I am doing a design which involves several components in an enclosure. I wanted to try a different enclosure so I deleted the enclosure, saved the guts of the design, then opened it, made a new component and imported the new enclosure. I then moved all the bits into it and saved it as a new design. Looks great, trouble is, I have tried to put a circle on the front panel, but when I select the face all the bits jump out of the box. I'm sure I saved the new position when I moved it all but they seem to want to live somewhere else!

I have noticed that there are two origins in the design. Is there a way of combining everything into a single origin?

You may have needed to add a "Capture Position" feature after you've moved the components into their correct positions:

I was pretty sure I'd done that when I moved the new box in. Is there a way of capturing the position of everything now? I don't have that Icon you show next to Select.

 

I thought I would try and select everything and move it all, with the capture position box ticked, but it says "Root component can't be moved"

Hi docara.

 

There are a couple of joints within the internal components, but nothing between the box and them.

 

I will try re-loading the box drawing and make sure I capture the position.

Hi 

 

When you build an assembly (of components) it is generally considered good practice to 'Ground' something. A suitable component relevant to your design, then start jointing others components to it.

 

Fusions Jointing capabilities will take care of any alignments needed especially if you use the CTRL key when selecting points on a plane. 

 

Capturing a position only comes in to play if you move something

Haha! It's never an ideal world, sadly 🙂

 

It would be nice to ground the box then move all the other components into it, but in this instance the box is the last thing to go in. I try not to move too many items at once because I'm lacking in RAM and it often crashes.

 

The good news is that I think I have worked out the answer to my original question. When you insert a drawing into a design, you get the move handles etc. but you don't get the option to capture the position, strangely. You need to roughly position it, deselect it, select it again and then you are offered the capture, you can then move it into its final position and it will stay there, relative to everything else. Phew!

Honestly Bud use Joints!!!

 

If you're coming from another package this is one of the greatest things about Fusion - embrace it usually one click and your done. If you use move you run the danger of things moving around (don't ask how I know) in the future.

 

I am running 3GB Ram, Integrated Graphics and an old AthlonII x2 CPU I am using sliding, Revolute and Rigid Joints about 30 in all. and its fine (ish) You will only  need a handful of Rigid Joints job done. What I can't do is use the global interference tool (forget the name) on the moving joints to check for collisions during motion but this wont apply to you.

 

 

Try it and see - you'll never waste your time with the move/align commands again you just don't need them especially in your situation. (again don't ask me how I know!!

I'm coming from Rhino and I've often been tempted to go right back there! I'll definitely start using joints more, but I'm a bit worried it locks components together forever, what happens if you decide you want the tube to poke through the panel in a slightly different place, but you've already made a rigid joint?

Then you either edit the existing joint, or delete it and apply a new one.  I second the notion that you should avoid the move command,  and that you should embrace using joints.  I would add to embrace using the time line.
