No Tangency Handles on creased edges in Sculpt Mode??

This problem is driving me mad. I'm trying to make a form for a render (doesn't need to be perfect, just look good) that is basically an 'inflated' item. (Think pool inflatable.) I need creased lines representing the seams of the object, and then the faces have to bulge outwards. I want to control the curve of the bulge, but no matter how many edges I add or where I put the vertices, I always end up with spiky corners.
Despite being creased edges, there are no tangent handles for these vertices anywhere! What gives? How do I make this work?
